Ricochets: When Perception Becomes the Echo of the Present
With Ricochets, the General Consumer Association in Braunschweig presents an exhibition by the Ukrainian-Polish artist Vitalii Shupliak. The opening on Thursday, November 5, 2026, leads into an artistic exploration of perception, memory, and media transmission. The title refers to the bouncing of a signal and simultaneously opens a space for thought between military optics, digital surfaces, reflections, soap bubbles, and light.
Images of Fear and Practices of Survival
Vitalii Shupliak, born in 1993 in Ukraine and currently living and working in Berlin, moves between video installation, painting, performance, and spatial installation. His art revolves around migration, identity, borders, and the transitions between reality and virtuality. In Ricochets, perception does not appear as a neutral window to the world, but as a mobile process: images, information, and experiences are received, fragmented, and returned altered.
Surfaces, Signals, and Reflections
The exhibition directs the examination of works to those surfaces where meaning emerges. Military targeting systems meet the everyday user interface of smartphones; the mirror confronts the delicate skin of a soap bubble, while light creates spaces of recognition and hiding. Forms and materials unfold an ambivalent spatial effect: they promise orientation while simultaneously leading into zones of uncertainty.
The aesthetic principle of bouncing also shapes the exhibition atmosphere. An image does not remain at its first impression. It undergoes memories, fears, digital interfaces, and cultural codes. From visual reflection emerges a reaction, and from the reaction a stance. Shupliak's artistic direction thus combines sensory experience and social analysis.
Between Painting, Video, and Installation
Shupliak's artistic practice is characterized by reduced forms and far-reaching concepts. His works examine the transmission of information as well as the impossibility of forwarding a message unchanged. This tension between clarity and disturbance forms a central access point to the exhibition. Visitors experience an art experience that focuses less on definitive answers and more on concentrated perception, irritation, and cultural education.
The artist studied Fine Arts in Lviv, Gdansk, Poznań, and Braunschweig. His works have been exhibited, among others, at the National Museum in Poznań, the Villa Stuck Museum in Munich, the KINDL in Berlin, the MOCAK in Krakow, and at international art and media art festivals. He has received awards and recognitions, including at the European Media Art Festival, the FilmFestSpezial in Hanover, and the Art+Steel Sponsorship Award.
An Evening for Intensive Work Examination
The opening begins at 8:00 PM at the General Consumer Association e. V. at Hinter Liebfrauen 2. The exhibition will remain open in Braunschweig until December 20, 2026. The presentation offers space for a decelerated encounter with contemporary art and for the question of how images shape our reality, divert, and return to us.
Conclusion: Perception as a Mobile Space
Ricochets promises an exhibition where video, installation, painting, and performance converge into a dense reflection on war, exile, digital media, and human perception. Art enthusiasts can expect a sensory and simultaneously art-historically connectable experience that sets familiar images in motion. A visit to the General Consumer Association is especially worthwhile for all who wish to experience contemporary art as an aesthetic experience and as a social space for thought.
