Remembering, listening, and sharing responsibility

On November 9, 2026, the event series HörMal! invites you to a dignified commemoration of the Reich Pogrom Night 1938 at the Braunschweig Synagogue. The event combines a culture of remembrance, Jewish history, prayer, literature, and music into a profound religious and social experience.

Commemoration of the Victims of the Pogrom Night

The afternoon begins at 4:00 PM with a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial plaque for the former synagogue on Alten Knochenhauerstraße. This will be followed by the prayers El Male Rachamin and Kaddish. They provide a liturgical form of mourning and remember the Jewish citizens who were persecuted and murdered during the Nazi crimes.

Guided Tours Through History and Architecture

Starting at 5:00 PM, Dr. Christina Krafczyk, Dr. Ulrich Knufinke, and Katrin Keßler will guide attendees through the history of the place. The focus will be on the Jewish community, the destroyed synagogue of 1875, the memory of the Reich Pogrom Night, and the significance of the current synagogue building. The synagogue on Steinstraße has been a place for services, community life, cultural events, and interreligious encounters since 2006.

Literature, Piano Improvisation, and Biblical Voice

At 6:30 PM, a concert reading with Dori Engel and Noam Sivan will take place, along with presentations by Hila Meckier. Noam Sivan will create piano improvisations while texts by Hans Peter Richter, Manfred Franke, Paul Celan, and Primo Levi will be heard. The program will be complemented by the distant voice of the biblical prophet Isaiah. This will create an atmosphere of reflection, where language, music, and religious memory are interconnected.

A Faith Experience of Quiet Attention

The event opens space for calm, mourning, reflection, and shared responsibility. Between prayer, historical mediation, and music, remembrance becomes an experienced living task. People from different religious backgrounds and all interested parties are invited to participate in this special commemoration.

Participation and Registration

Admission is free. Due to limited seating, registration with the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation is required for the guided tours and the concert reading. Men are requested to wear a head covering.

Conclusion: HörMal! connects Jewish commemoration tradition, prayer, history, literature, and improvised music into a profound evening at the Braunschweig Synagogue. Those who want to consciously experience remembrance and make a statement against forgetting will find a dignified place for encounter here.
