Festival of Lights 2026: Braunschweig shines in spectacular images
When twilight falls over Braunschweig on October 28, 2026, the city center will transform for the first time into a radiant total work of art. At the Festival of Lights, visitors will experience spectacular projections, atmospheric light art, and historical landmarks in a completely new presentation over five evenings.
A glowing route through the Lion City
From October 28 to November 1, 2026, Braunschweig will glow daily from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM. A total of eleven locations will be part of the festival: including the State Theater, the Museum Park, the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, the Residence Castle, the Town Hall, the Dankwarderode Castle, the Braunschweig Cathedral, the Gewandhaus, the Old Town Hall, St. Ulrici, and the Old Weight.
The light installations connect historical architecture with modern projection technology. Moving images, colorful facades, and precisely tuned lighting moods tell stories about the city and turn familiar places into impressive experiential spaces.
Festival atmosphere between light art and city history
The Festival of Lights stands for visual storytelling with international aspirations. Buildings are not only illuminated but also explored in content: their history, architecture, and significance to the city are incorporated into the presentations. This creates an urban multi-day experience that combines art, city exploration, and a sense of community.
For the premiere in Braunschweig, the organizers expect tens of thousands of visitors. The city center will become an open stage, where walks, photo moments, and shared awe come together. The open-air atmosphere is particularly impressive after sunset when projections and light surfaces animate the historical facades.
Guided tours for families, groups, and explorers
Those who want to delve deeper into the light art and the history of the route points can participate in exclusive guided tours. A classic festival tour, a family tour, and a rickshaw tour are offered. This program is aimed at both festival fans as well as families, photography enthusiasts, and guests from outside.
Free admission and After the Lights Party
The festival itself is accessible free of charge to all citizens. The premiere is made possible by Volkswagen Financial Services as the sponsor. The organizer is Applaus Kulturproduktionen GmbH in cooperation with city marketing. The festival is supported by BSVG as a mobility partner and Braunschweiger Zeitung as a media partner.
After the tour through the illuminated city center, the night continues with the After the Lights Parties at Schön & Frölich. Electronic sounds, visuals, and club atmosphere extend the festival evening.
Conclusion: Braunschweig becomes a stage for light art
The Festival of Lights 2026 brings together international light art, regional city history, and a special autumn atmosphere. Visitors can expect a free open-air experience with eleven glowing route points, guided tours, and a city center full of color, movement, and encounters. Anyone who wants to experience Braunschweig from a new perspective should mark the five festival evenings in their calendar.
