Torben Laib transforms the project space K2 into a sound landscape of space, resonance, and perception

With Rhizome, sound artist Torben Laib opens an exhibition in the project space K2 of the General Consumer Cooperative that not only plays with the space but thinks it audibly. The installation responds to the unique architecture of the venue, bringing light, sound, and spatial perception together into a dense artistic experience.

A space that seems to breathe like a brain

Laib reacts to the high windows, the visible pipes, and the intense reverberation of the project room with a sound-light-space installation that evokes the impression of an underground place as well as the idea of a living network. The building complex reads as an oversized brain: Structures, impulses, and connections condense into an aesthetic experience between sculpture, installation, and sound art.

Between labyrinth and rhizome

At the center is a tense thought model. While the labyrinth refers to orientation, decision, and getting lost, the rhizome opens up an image for connection, branching, and organic growth. Laib translates this contrast into a multi-layered exhibition space where sound is not just accompaniment, but shapes material, space, and perception itself.

Torben Laib: Sound art with architectural awareness

Born in Volda in 1990, Torben Laib studied sculpture at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts in Kiel and later sound art at HBK Braunschweig. His works move at the intersections of installation, performance, and sound art. Early exhibitions and projects showed that he is concerned with the relationships between the material and the immaterial, silence and sound, space and resonance. It is from this that Rhizome derives its authority and openness.

Curation, atmosphere, and cultural education

The General Consumer Cooperative has been known for years for projects that connect contemporary art, mediation, and experimental formats. This exhibition also fits into a curated practice that understands the visit not as mere viewing but as contemplating works in space. For art-interested visitors, a concentrated field opens up between sound research, spatial perception, and cultural education.

Visitor experience with resonance

Those who enter Rhizome do not experience a silent hanging, but a vibrating exhibition atmosphere. The space responds to movement, to hearing, to attention. Thus, an art experience emerges that remains in memory even after leaving the place: precise, sensual, and of particular intensity.

Conclusion: Rhizome is an invitation to experience sound as a sculpture of space and to rediscover the architectural presence of the project space K2. This exhibition should be experienced live.
