Women at the Braunschweig Court: History from a New Perspective
On October 18, 2026, the Schlossmuseum Braunschweig invites the public to a guided tour that casts a spotlight on a frequently underestimated chapter of Welf history. Under the title More than Just Accessories – Women at the Braunschweig Court, visitors will encounter personalities who significantly shaped science, music, architectural culture, and political networks at court.
A Shift in Perspective on Courtly Society
The tour led by Andrea Kienitz focuses on women like Philippine Charlotte and Augusta of Great Britain. Their biographies tell of opportunities for action between courtly expectations, personal responsibilities, and societal influence. This creates a nuanced picture of women's roles among the Welfs that extends beyond the traditional portrayal as mere representative companions of the dukes.
Science, Music, and Construction Projects
In the historic setting of the Schlossmuseum, it becomes evident how women at the Braunschweig court contributed to cultural developments. They promoted science and music, initiated construction projects, and established clever networks. The one-hour examination of historical portraits, rooms, and courtly artifacts combines art-historical context with cultural-historical communication.
Exhibition Atmosphere and Aesthetic Experience
The exhibition atmosphere of the Schlossmuseum creates a sensual framework for this art experience. Representative rooms, historical materials, portraits, and the staging of courtly life worlds offer an immediate aesthetic experience. The tour connects painting, architecture, and social history into a vibrant museum narrative.
Cultural Education at the Schlossmuseum
The tour is aimed at everyone who wishes to understand history not just through dates but through concrete life paths, spaces, and objects. Expert mediation and vivid storytelling make the curation of the permanent exhibition accessible and show how historical power relations can be reinterpreted from a contemporary perspective.
Conclusion: A Castle Tour with Surprising Depth
Visitors can expect an informative and atmospheric tour through the history of the Welfs that highlights female agency. Anyone who wishes to experience the Schlossmuseum Braunschweig with a sharpened view of courtly culture, art, and society should not miss this tour. The number of participants is limited; registration is recommended.
